St Paul’s Cathedral

The autumn of 2015 confirmed the total collapse of the world economy. The consequent winter was darkest. As the days grew shorter reality no longer resembled the ideals its society was based on. The pursuit of a material happiness proved non sustainable. Unemployment and disillusion spread throughout the City.

The ancient ley line crossed the heart of the city from west south west to east north east for three and one quarter miles. Connecting Saint Clement Danes in the west, The Temple Church, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Saint Helen’s, Bishopsgate and Saint Dunstan’s, Stepney in the east. A Cosmic Background Imager now sat precariously by the altar of each church forming an array around the cathedral. In a renewed ontological search, they observed the cosmos from within the old houses of god.

The electromagnetic radiation filled the universe. Its faint glow was not emitted from any star or galaxy but existed somewhere between them. A relic from an early universe. The radiation was always observed and measured. The scientists called it cosmic background radiation, but I earnestly referred to as relic radiation.

When they closed the great apertures the hall was immersed in cosmic projections. Stars fell slowly to the cathedral floor. The ephemeral relic performed its ancient leitourgia as the scientists observed its radiance. Were we looking into the face of creation?

The metaphysical search always ended the same way. As the sun reached its apex the great apertures were opened. Its eternal beams once again touched the cathedral floor.

Studioplex connects students, faculty, and schools producing provocative architectural design work worldwide. Developed through UCLA’s Laboratory for Cross Cultural Studies at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design the site collects and displays architectural design projects of students created within a studio context and directed by an educator. Studioplex focuses on the studio context to enrich architectural discourse while expanding its production and communication to an international audience. Studioplex is an innovative forum for contemporary architecture in our shared global community.
